Older people across the UK could receive up to £300 towards their heating bills this winter, but not everyone will qualify for the same amount, and some pensioners may need to take action to receive their money. A deadline of 21 December has also attracted attention, but it is crucial to understand what that date actually means before assuming a payment will be lost.

The official deadline to claim the Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026–27 is 31 March 2027, not 21 December 2026. Here is who qualifies, when payments are expected and what pensioners should check now.

    Table of Contents

    • What is actually true about the £300 payment?
    • Does everyone need to claim before December?
    • Could you receive less than £300 — or have to repay it?

      • The bottom line

What is actually true about the £300 payment?

The Winter Fuel Payment is a government payment intended to help eligible older people with winter heating costs. For winter 2026–27, eligible people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland may receive between £100 and £300, depending on their age and household circumstances.

According to GOV.UK’s official Winter Fuel Payment guidance, eligibility generally requires someone to have been born on or before 27 June 1960 and to have usually lived in England, Wales or Northern Ireland during the qualifying week of 21–27 September 2026.

The maximum £300 payment is not available to everyone. For example, someone who qualifies and lives alone, or lives with someone who is not eligible, can receive £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, rising to £300 for those born before 28 September 1946.

Payments are usually made automatically in November or December. Eligible recipients should receive a letter in October or November explaining how much they will get and which bank account will receive the money.

Does everyone need to claim before December?

No. Most eligible pensioners do not need to submit a claim because the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) processes payments automatically.

However, there are exceptions. If you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or you have deferred your State Pension since your last payment, you may need to apply if you do not receive one of the benefits that normally triggers automatic payment.

Postal claims for winter 2026–27 opened on 21 September 2026. Telephone claims open on 19 October 2026, and the official claim deadline is 31 March 2027.

The separate date of 21 December 2026 concerns opting out of the payment for winter 2027–28, rather than the deadline for claiming this winter’s money.

Could you receive less than £300 — or have to repay it?

There are two important points pensioners should understand before budgeting around the payment.

First, the amount depends on individual circumstances. Age, whether another eligible person lives in the household and whether certain means-tested benefits are claimed can affect the amount received.

Second, pensioners with total annual income above £35,000 will generally have their Winter Fuel Payment recovered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). This is usually done through a tax code adjustment or a Self Assessment tax return. A person whose income is below that threshold will not have the payment recovered under this rule.

The rules also differ in Scotland, where eligible pensioners may receive the separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead.

    Common mistakes pensioners should avoid

Assuming everyone receives £300: The payment varies, and some eligible people receive £100, £150 or £200.

Believing Pension Credit is essential: Eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment is not generally restricted to Pension Credit recipients under the current rules for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Waiting until December to check: If you need to make a claim, you can start checking the requirements now rather than waiting for a payment that may not arrive automatically.

Trusting messages requesting bank details: Be wary of texts, emails or calls claiming you must provide banking information to release your payment. Use official government contact details instead.

    What should pensioners do next?

Start by checking the official Winter Fuel Payment eligibility guidance. If you normally receive the payment automatically, look out for your letter and check your bank account in November or December.

If you think you qualify but have never received the payment, or you have deferred your State Pension, visit the official claims page to find out whether you need to apply. You can also contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.

If the payment has not arrived by 27 January 2027, GOV.UK advises eligible people to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

    The bottom line

The £300 Winter Fuel Payment could provide useful help with heating bills, but the amount depends on eligibility and household circumstances. Most eligible pensioners will be paid automatically, while those who need to claim have until 31 March 2027 for this winter’s payment. Do not confuse that deadline with 21 December, which relates to opting out of next winter’s payment.
