Octopus Energy Launches Home Battery Range to Challenge Tesla and Cut Domestic Bills

Octopus Energy has unveiled its first proprietary line of home battery storage systems, marking a significant shift as it becomes the first major British energy supplier to market its own domestic storage hardware directly to consumers. Revealed at the company’s Energy Tech Summit in London, the new “Octopus Nook” range is designed to allow households to capitalise on flexible smart tariffs by storing electricity when prices are low and discharging it during peak demand hours.

The product rollout targets a diverse consumer base, introducing options for both property owners and renters. For individuals living in flats or rented accommodation—who are typically blocked from traditional energy installations—the firm introduced the Octopus Nook Cube. This compact, shoebox-sized device has a base capacity of two kilowatt-hours (kWh), plugs directly into a conventional wall socket, and can be integrated with additional units to scale up to 10.5kWh of storage.

For larger properties, the company developed the Nook Colossus, an engineer-installed wall-mounted system. This unit can be stacked to provide up to 30kWh of total capacity, providing a residential backup system that approaches the scale of standard electric vehicle batteries. Both options include a 12-year warranty and operate alongside solar panel arrays, though they can also draw electricity directly from the grid during cheaper overnight periods.

While exact retail pricing has not yet been confirmed, Octopus founder and Chief Executive Greg Jackson noted that the larger wall-mounted models are intended to be approximately one-third cheaper than established market alternatives, such as Tesla’s systems.

The commercial strategy coincides with a broader surge in clean technology adoption across Europe, driven largely by retail market volatility and geopolitical instability in the Middle East that has inflated fossil fuel costs. According to the supplier, it has already installed nearly 26,000 solar and battery setups across its existing territories.

The new product suite is scheduled to become available next year for customers in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. By integrating the hardware with its existing smart software infrastructure, Octopus aims to alleviate pressure on the national grid during peak hours while offering household electricity bill reductions.
