McDonald’s has cut prices once more. The fast-food giant aims to win back cash-strapped UK consumers. This move comes as living costs soar across Britain. Families feel the pinch from high energy bills and grocery prices. MCD shares dipped slightly after the news. But bosses hope cheaper Big Macs will boost footfall.

The chain rolled out the cuts this week. Items like the cheeseburger dropped to 99p from 1.19 euros. McNugget meals fell by up to 20%. Prices on fries and drinks also tumbled. This is the second round of reductions in six months. Last autumn, McDonald’s trimmed menu costs by an average of 10%. Now, they target budget diners hardest hit by inflation.

Why now? UK inflation eased to 2.3% last month. But real wages lag for many. Food prices rose 5% year-on-year. The Office for National Statistics report shows 2.5 million households cut back on eating out. McDonald’s UK CEO Alistair Macrow said, “We’re listening to our customers. Value matters more than ever.” Rivals like KFC and Burger King face the same squeeze. They too pushed deals recently.

When did this start? Discounts hit menus from Monday. They apply at over 1300 UK outlets. Drive-thrus and apps see the biggest savings. A full McDonald’s meal now costs under 5 euros for some combos. This beats home cooking for busy parents. Data from the app shows a 15% sales lift already.

Current status looks promising. Footfall rose 8% in early trials. But challenges remain. Labour costs climbed after the minimum wage hike to 11.44 euros. Supply chain woes from Red Sea disruptions add pressure. McDonald’s global sales grew 4% last quarter. The UK lags at 2%. Analysts at Barclays predict more cuts if traffic stalls.

Experts weigh in. Retail guru Neil Saunders notes. “Price wars save chains like McDonald’s. But margins shrink fast.” UK consumers spent 12 billion euros on fast food last year. Yet 40% say they eat out less. Government data shows child poverty at record highs. Cheap eats help struggling families.

McDonald’s isn’t alone. Greggs cut sausage roll prices too. Subway offers 3-euro footlongs. The high street battles for every pound. Loyalty apps track the wins. McDonald’s app users snag extra deals.

In the end, these cuts signal tough times ahead. McDonald’s bets on volume over profit per sale. UK shoppers get relief. Will it stick? Watch sales figures next month. For now, that 99p burger tempts tight budgets.
