Mechanical processes are becoming more common in every industry, to the extent that automation is now an unavoidable fact of the workplace. We see automated machines taking over factories, paper folding machines in the office – automation is positively everywhere! This begs the question: should your business go mechanic-all or nothing? We’re here to answer this question, with the five pros and cons of automating business processes, seen below.

    Table of Contents

    • Pro: Efficiency
    • Pro: Reliability
    • Pro: Cost
    • Con: Job Uncertainty
    • Con: Human Care

    Pro: Efficiency

There’s really no doubt about it, automated business processes are far more efficient than human ones. Unfortunately, as sentient people, there’s a tendency for us to make mistakes! Human error is normal, but it does prevent true efficiency in a business. When you let machines do the hard work – such as a paper folding machine, for example – you allow your employees’ time for more important responsibilities. Automating administrative tasks such as paper folding, document management or HR-related needs ensures your business runs more smoothly than before.

    Pro: Reliability

There are many tasks in business that require extensive manual input. Business processes that involve manufacture or large-scale warehouse production know this well. For humans, manual input is guaranteed to cause great fatigue over time. Automating hands-on business processes in this way allows for improved accuracy, reduced error, and admirable precision. You’ll receive detailed reports, time tracking, and order filling – all on time, and to standard.

    Pro: Cost

Paying wages to a host of in-house employees is likely the bulk of your business expenses, so it’s no wonder that automating some of your key business processes will lead to reduced costs for you! Human employees are invaluable, but costly. Although automation might be a hefty investment at first, you’re sure to regain plenty of money in the long run.

    Con: Job Uncertainty

But, automation being cheaper than a human wage leads us to one problem: job uncertainty. At the moment, one in three employees consider their job to be at risk from automation. This is quite a concerning number! For employees that currently carry out repetitive, manual tasks, this might turn out to be true. On the other hand, humans must also design these new automated machines, thus creating a whole other industry full of highly skilled jobs! Whatever happens, the shift to fully automated business processes will be a gradual one, and we may never achieve full automation at all.

    Con: Human Care

Humans will always be invaluable employees for one reason: they care! No matter the industry you’re in, quality customer care and care for your business are kings. Human connection and innovation generate unique ideas that machines are incapable of. Humans also notice when things in business go wrong quickly, and work together to find a solution! Machines are not the greatest at teamwork unless they are programmed to be.

Overall, when you consider automating certain business processes, make sure you’re automating the right thing. Repetitive, manual tasks are commonly automated, but ensure you’re not removing valuable, human employees just for the cost-benefit. Consider how your business will be impacted as a whole and automate from there!
