We have seen a huge shift towards remote and hybrid working following the pandemic. Both have become the norm for businesses across the UK. Although restrictions have been largely removed, remote working is here to stay. According to ONS data, 85% of homeworking adults favoured a hybrid working model.

You’ll need remote access to internal business systems if you work from home. Remote computer access is when you can log on to another computer or network when you’re not in the office. This allows employees to work efficiently at home.

Some of the benefits of remote computer access include:

    • The ability to troubleshoot
    • Efficient file sharing
    • Easy monitoring
    • Easy connection to work networks and servers

But there are several risks associated with remote computer access. From improper security controls to eavesdropping – working remotely can be risky. We’ve put together some top tips to help you remain safe while working remotely.

How to stay safe while working remotely

    Use a secure Wi-Fi connection

If you’re using remote computer access, it’s important that you use a secure Wi-Fi connection. Avoid public Wi-Fi for this reason.

If you must use public Wi-Fi networks, consider adding a VPN to protect your information and data. It’s worth noting that you can get a good free VPN for Chrome.

    Lock devices when you can

If you need to leave your table or station for any reason, make sure to lock your device. By doing this, you won’t leave your computer open to prying eyes looking to catch a glimpse of your work.

It’s also important not to display confidential information on your screen. This could create a GDPR breach.

If you do, you may open yourself up to some hefty fines.

    Ensure you have antivirus software

Hackers may also target your work computer’s data. Make sure you have reputable antivirus software on your laptop to stop this.

These antivirus solutions will stop you from installing risky applications. Restricting access from certain devices will also protect your computer from hackers.

Your IT department will normally do this for you. You could also install a reputable free antivirus solution to protect your devices.

    Final thoughts

Although remote working offers huge benefits, it’s not without its risks. From eavesdroppers to hackers – if you work remotely, you need to remain vigilant. Install a VPN, antivirus software, and lock your laptop when you’re not there. These sensible measures can protect your work and reputation.
