Sony Increases PlayStation 5 Prices: UK sees £90 Jump

Sony has confirmed that it will be increasing its PlayStation 5 consoles at a very high price, and in the UK, gamers are being hit with the drastic rise of up to £90. The relocation will impact all of the major models, such as the base PS5, Digital Edition and the high-end PS5 Pro, and all these will come into effect as of April 2, 2026.

Sony says that the move has been arrived at after a thorough consideration of the prevailing economic pressures affecting the world. Increasing component prices, particularly memory chips, have also been a significant contributing force because the makers are becoming more focused on high-demand AI infrastructure rather than consumer electronics.

The price rise in the UK is high across the board. The normal PS5 will now be sold at £569.99, and the Digital Edition will be sold at £519.99. The high-quality PS5 Pro, which is characterised by better graphics and performance, will be increased to £789.99.

It has been reported that this is a £90 jump per model, which is one of the most significant price increases in the life cycle of the console.

Britain is not the only country to have a price increase. Sony is also implementing similar rises across the world, with a 100 rise in the United States of America and an equal rise in Europe and Japan. It is the second significant price rise of the £5 in less than a year and is a sign of the continued stability in the gaming hardware market.

Conventionally, the prices of consoles usually decrease with time; however, the PS5 generation has ended this pattern due to inflation, the effects of the supply chain, and geopolitical tensions in the manufacturing of semiconductors.

Analysts in the industry caution that the increased prices will decelerate the rate of adoption of consoles in 2026. The decline in the sale of £5 has already been reported by Sony, and the company has fallen by 16% every year in terms of sales during the recent holiday season. The increased price will also cause a percentage of gamers to switch to other options, including PC gaming, used consoles and subscription.

Meanwhile, the fact that the increase is predetermined before the release of major new games would indicate that Sony attempts to balance demand and profitability.

To the consumers, the message is simple: the prices are not likely to go down soon. As long as production costs are growing, there can be a reason to believe that the ps5 Ps5, in particular PSPro, will be priced high in the predictable future.

With the gaming industry adjusting to economic demands and technological changes, the most recent action by Sony points to a new dimension where the pricing of the consoles is not going to be on the lower curve as it used to be.
